There are many ways to describe
Herschelle Herman Gibbs. Of those, ‘the most talented sportsman of his generation' is the most accurate. Famous as an explosive batsman whose instinctive stroke-making is able to dismantle any bowling attack - whether he is opening an innings or batting down the order - Gibbs could have chosen any number of sports in which to make his name. At high school he was regarded as the best rugby flyhalf in the land and was described by legend Naas Botha as the next Springbok flyhalf. He was, it is said, even better at football: according to those he played with as a junior, Gibbs would have made it to the top European football leagues. But Herschelle chose cricket.
Steve Smith is a former editor of Sports Illustrated magazine and current editor of The Red Bulletin. He is rare among sports writers in that he has always been far more interested in the people - the athletes, the players, the fans - than he has been in on-field results. Steve has interviewed and written about South Africa's top sports personalities over the past twelve years, and has contributed to GQ, the Mail & Guardian, TopCar, British Airways Horizons, Cosmopolitan and many other publications.
There’s something about Herschelle Gibbs – a certain quality that has endeared him to cricket fans in South Africa and around the world. Despite the frustrating on-field inconsistencies of this towering talent, and the messy and very public off-field personal troubles that have tracked him through the years, Herschelle remains one of South African cricket’s best-loved sons. In his own, very frank, words, Herschelle Gibbs chronicles the ups and downs of his personal and professional life, and describes what it’s been like to be part of the Proteas set-up for the past fourteen years, through the controversies of its various captains, coaches and administrators. To the Point is, of course, a spicy story of excess – women, alcohol, money … and plenty of runs – but underlying it all is a warm and generous man who wears his heart on his sleeve.
